A retro diner in the old corner building at Deepwater, halfway between Glen Innes and Tenterfield. Hamburgers we're known for up and down the highway, toasted sandwiches made to order, barista coffee and thickshakes. Open Wednesday to Sunday.

A proper highway stop

The kind of place you plan the drive around.

Deepwater is a small town on the New England Highway, and the diner sits in the old building on the corner of Young Street. Travellers, truckies and caravanners pull in off the road, and half the town comes through the door during the week.

Inside it is aqua vinyl booths, a wall of 45s and LP covers, a 1957 Chevy front end turned into a bench seat, and a reading nook down the back with books you are welcome to swap. The food is cooked to order and the coffee is barista made.

What is on

Known up and down the highway for the hamburgers.

Everything is made to order. The board out the front has the day's hot food, and there is always coffee going.

The thing we're known for up and down the highway. Built properly, the old way, and big enough that you'll want both hands. Ask for the works and you'll get the lot.

Toasted sandwiches

Thick cut bread, properly grilled, filled and pressed to order. Chicken and red onion, ham cheese and tomato, or tell us what you're after.

Coffee and thickshakes

Barista made coffee, and thickshakes the way a diner is supposed to do them. There are loaded fries and hot food on the board too.

Ring ahead on 0408 758 198 if you want something ready to pick up, or if you are travelling with a group.

The room

Forty fives on the wall and a Chevy in the window.

People stop for the burger and stay for a look around. The walls carry old 45rpm singles and LP covers, there is memorabilia on every shelf, and the front window holds a 1957 Chevrolet front end that somebody turned into a seat.

The reading nook

Down the back there are books to read and to swap, and big blue lounge chairs to sink into. Plenty of people order a coffee and stay a while.

Records and memorabilia

Old singles, album covers and shelves of bits and pieces collected over the years. It is worth a slow lap of the room before you sit down.

Room to pull up

Easy parking right out the front for cars, vans and rigs, with a couple of tables outside under the awning.

Fantastic service from the friendliest people in Deepwater. The works burger was fantastic and they even added chilli sauce for me. Very interesting collection of memorabilia, an extensive book nook, old world diner decor and amazing blacksmith section. Looking forward to returning soon.

We came for the fossicking and never left.

The Shoesmith family used to come down this way on school holidays, camping and fossicking around Deepwater when the kids were younger. We liked it enough that in 2021 we packed up and moved down from Crows Nest in Queensland, and in 2022 we opened the diner in the old corner building.

Mari and Deb help out through the week, and between us we put out good honest food, proper coffee and milkshakes from Wednesday to Sunday. It is a welcoming room, and the community that comes through it every day is the best part of the job.

Ken's knife room is through the back.

Ken runs his own handmade knife business, Sharp Steel, from a room in the same building. Hand forged knives and axes, and a fair bit worth looking at even if you are only in for a coffee. More than one review has mentioned it on the way out.

Sharp Steel is Ken's own business and separate to the diner. Ask at the counter if the room is open.
